Cowgirl For a Day – Alpine, WY

We stayed at a campground called Moose Flats campground just outside of Alpine, Wyoming. It was an interesting spot. We were 22 miles down a dirt road and we had the entire campground to ourselves. It’s no wonder we had so much privacy since we were way out in the middle of nowhere. It was peaceful to sit and listen to the river running, the squirrels chattering and the yeehaw of the cowboys/girls running cattle up and down the road. I’ve never seen such a sight with the exception of the movies and that doesn’t count. It was glorious watching the way they handle their horsed and get the cattle to go wherever they wanted. As I listened to them hoot and holler I caught a glimpse of a cowgirl who was masterful in her task. I was immediately enamored. I watched as they chatted to each other and kept the cattle in line. Even though I couldn’t understand what they were saying I just knew in my mind what they were doing. After they passed I noticed a lone cow lagging behind. I thought to myself “man I should be a cowgirl. I’d be awesome at it.” At that point I went into my romantic notion of what it would be like to be a cowgirl and it was awesome! I saw myself sitting on top of a very nice brown mare who of course would not bite me and listened to everything I said. We had a relationship that only a cowgirl like myself could have with her horse. I didn’t have to tell her what to do. She just knew! I ride along with Stubs McFeeley who I refer to as Boss Stubs. We cow people call him stubs because when he was a mere boy a wild horse bit four of his fingers off leaving 4 stubs. But Stubs he didn’t give up. He caught that wild horse and tamed him as his own. To this day Stubs is the only who can ride that horse. So as we go along me and Boss Stubs are moving the cattle east. I don’t know why we are moving them that’s just what we do. We move them from one spot to the next. As we ride my hair is flowing in the wind not getting tangled but glistening in the light of the setting sun. Suddenly I see a lone cattle. I yell out “Boss Stubs. Over Yonder! You see her? I’m going after her.” So I turn my horse around with expert skills I grip that horse steering wheel and around we go. I run my horse as fast as I can and catch up to the loose cow. I yell “hoot hoot. Giddy up…yeehaw” The cow mindful of my skills grunts and moos and takes off on a full run to catch up with the herd. I catch up with the herd and with Boss Stubs who says “nice job cowgirl Deb.” I nod my gratitude at the compliment coming from a man who nearly doesn’t talk at all. There is a sudden respect floating through the air and on we go to move the cattle to a destination unknown. As the sun is setting we know….”MOM? MOM? MOMMY? Hey MOM!” Ah crap “what?” “Do you know where my Ben 10 Watch is?” Sigh “no I don’t you had it last” “Okay thanks!” “Sure” Okay so back to my grand life as a cow girl. Wait is that a….oh wow that’s a cow running through our campsite. OMG that thing is HUGE! Maybe I won’t be a cowgirl after all. I’ll just stick with bookkeeping for now. Although if it weren’t for my paralyzing fear of horses and fear of grown cattle I would make a grand cowgirl. So for now Boss Stubs is on his own I have bank reconciliations to do!

We took another hike and found some more lakes!!  There are lakes everywhere here.  The snow is still melting from the mountains and creating beautiful lakes all over the mountain.  Here are pictures of the past two days hiking up the mountain and checking out the views and even Honey getting in a little fishing. :)

Hike Around The Lake – Brooklyn Lake, WY

We all took a walk around Brooklyn Lake this morning.  Chris, JoeJoe, myself and Rock n Sock went for the trek around.  It’s not a huge lake only about 36 acres.  There are a ton of these little lakes like this in the mountains of Wyoming.  Most of which are from the snow melt. As a matter of fact there’s still snow on the ground….how fun!  It’s about 80 degrees and awesome….except for all the bugs whew!  We also found out these parks where the lakes exist aren’t even open for the season until around the end of July because there is so much run off you can’t get through very well.  So we hit it just at the right time.

Here are the pictures of our hike.  At least I didn’t have to crawl on all fours for this one….LOL
